The Lighthouse That Inspired the Snowy Plover Inn
Hello Readers,
When writing book one of the Snowy Plover Inn Cozy Mystery Series, I had a picture in my mind of what the inn looked like. Imagine my surprise to find a framed photo in a thrift store that was eerily similar. I was happy to plunk down three dollars for it. Months later, I learned it was a photo of the San Luis Lighthouse. Located on a cliff near Avila Beach, it is inaccessible except with a guide on a trail behind a locked gate, or via ticketed trolley ride, or by kayaking…and then only on Wednesdays or Saturdays. I knew I needed to step into this real-life setting.
Last week, I booked the docent-led hike. Approximately four miles round trip, sturdy hiking shoes and lots of water recommended. My daughter and her friend would join me. I wasn’t discouraged by the phone call I received the day before, asking if I was still up for it given that an unseasonably toasty hot day of ninety-three degrees was expected. Nope. This may be my best chance to see it.
Worth it? Absolutely! First impression: it’s so much smaller than the Snowy Plover Inn. The tower above Pearla’s apartment had no room for window bench seats to stretch out on, and only a crawl space to stand outside by the railing. No exterior stairs either. There were some charming outbuildings, but no additional guest rooms off the back. But even in the story, those rooms were added later.
The view, however, was spectacular. Much better than the inn where you can see just a sliver of the ocean above the trees. On the tour we learned that before the lighthouse was painstakingly restored, it was in such disrepair one possible solution was to pull it off the cliff and into the sea. How sad to lose this piece of California history. Here’s some photos of the hike, lighthouse, and views.
Warmly,
Deanna
